    Science

The Bailiwick Curriculum Entitlements are covered in the La Houguette Curriculum and tracked through each unit.   The Bailiwick Thinking Scientifically skills are also at the heart of our scheme. Both the Bailiwick Entitlements and Thinking Scientifically skills have been mapped from Year 1 through to Year 6 looking at the smaller steps in between to ensure that children have a clear progression and keep them on track.  Our curriculum uses retrieval techniques in each lesson to help children remember and recall the key learning from the previous lesson and also previous units to enable children to link together their learning process. Our curriculum also integrates knowledge, 'thinking scientifically' skills and enquiry approaches. It provides hands-on learning and outdoor learning to ensure children experience science themselves so they can make sense of their learning.  Purposeful links to a range of scientists ensure that the children’s science capital is explored and increased and children are given opportunities to discuss their own experiences and learning.  Teachers have opportunities to develop their own subject knowledge as well as identify possible misconceptions children may have.

    Modern Foreign Languages

At La Houguette, we bring language learning to life. We study French using resources like Language Angels and Sentence Builders, fostering a positive, enthusiastic attitude toward new languages and cultures.

Pupils learn how languages work while expanding their understanding of the wider world. To make learning even more memorable, Year 5 students have the exciting opportunity to put their French skills into practice and gain a second-to-none cultural experience with a trip to France!

    Computing

At La Houguette, we empower pupils to become confident, creative, and safe users of technology. Through hands-on experience with a variety of digital tools, children develop the essential skills they need for modern life and future careers.

Online safety is woven throughout everything we do. Using Project Evolve, pupils learn how to protect their personal data, navigate AI-generated content, understand digital footprints, and stay safe and responsible online. Computing is integrated right across our curriculum, ensuring children leave La Houguette fully prepared to navigate an increasingly digital world.

    Design & Technology

At La Houguette, Design & Technology enables children  to solve real-world problems in practical, creative ways. Pupils go on an exciting step-by-step journey where they investigate existing products, then design, build, and evaluate creations of their own.

Hands-on projects span textiles, construction, electronics, and even cooking—where pupils get to use the professional kitchens at Les Beaucamps HIgh School. Every project has a real purpose and a specific user in mind, empowering children to think like real-life designers and inventors.

    History

In history, we take our pupils on an exciting journey into the past to help them make sense of the world today. Children explore how events from the Bailiwick, the UK, and beyond impact our daily lives—and how their own actions can shape a brighter future.

Through hands-on discovery, historical trips, local guest visits, and real artefacts, children learn to ask big questions, spot patterns over time, and think like true historians. We aim to nurture curious, thoughtful young minds who love exploring where we have come from and where we are  headed next.

    Geography

At La Houguette, we spark children’s curiosity about the world around them. We give our pupils the knowledge and skills to understand their environment through hands-on field trips, map reading, classroom research, and investigation. Children explore diverse places and cultures while learning about key global issues like sustainability and climate change. These real-life experiences help them connect their learning to the wider world—teaching them to question, explore, and think like true geographers!

    Art

At La Houguette, children embark on an exciting and creative art journey across the school. Our curriculum builds their artistic skills step-by-step—exploring colour, line, texture, shape, and digital art alongside  a wide range of media and tools.

Pupils gain inspiration from diverse artists, designers, architects, and sculptors from various cultures and styles. To celebrate their progress, every child keeps sketchbooks and dedicated portrait books that follow them throughout key stages, showcasing their growing talent and creative confidence over time.

    Music

At La Houguette, music is a joyful and journey-filled experience. Through our spiral curriculum, children revisit core musical concepts—like rhythm, pitch, pulse, and dynamics—building their knowledge and confidence step-by-step as they grow from Reception through Year 6.

Pupils develop their musical talents across four key strands: singing, composing, performing, and listening. By exploring a wide variety of musical styles, children learn to express themselves creatively, appreciate diverse sounds, and make music together with pride!

Visiting musicians also contribute to the children’s music education, namely in the wider opportunities programme and concerts provided by the Schools’ Music Service.

    RE

At La Houguette, Religious Education helps children grow into open-minded, respectful, and thoughtful global citizens. We use an approach that champions inclusive, academically rigorous approach to RE that moves beyond traditional study of world faiths and promotes exploring both religious and  non-religious worldviews to reflect our modern society.

Lessons offer a safe space for children to explore big questions, challenge stereotypes, and connect diverse traditions to their own lives and experiences. Using hands-on stimuli like real artefacts, vibrant imagery, and food, we inspire children to reflect deeply, celebrate diversity, and build a strong, sensitive understanding of the world around them!

    Physical Development

At La Houguette, we inspire a lifelong love of movement, sport, and healthy living. Our PE curriculum is designed to support every child’s physical, emotional, and social well-being through inclusive, meaningful, and fun experiences.

Pupils enjoy two dedicated PE lessons each week, exploring two different sporting disciplines every half term to build control, coordination, and confidence. Through sports, children learn vital life skills—like teamwork, leadership, safe practice, and supporting one another. Sports include, netball, football, cricket, Parkour, rugby, yoga, gymnastics and athletics.

Beyond the classroom, pupils can join a wide range of extra-curricular sports clubs, competitive events, and inclusive festivals that celebrate active participation. We empower every child to build strong, healthy habits and stay active for life!

    PSHE

At La Houguette, PSHE equips children with the practical knowledge, skills, and values they need to lead healthy, safe, productive, and balanced lives. Through a cohesive, whole-school approach focused on emotional literacy, resilience, and mindfulness, we nurture pupils' physical and mental well-being in an ever-changing world. We use PSHE Association resources and Project Evolve to support this.

Children learn to build positive relationships, develop empathy, and navigate challenging or conflicting situations thoughtfully.  We teach our children to stay safe in the real world and online. Our curriculum gives pupils the time and safe space to reflect on their own values while building mutual respect and consideration for others.

With visits from a wide range of community specialists and interactive, school-wide themes, we help children build the confidence, focus, and self-awareness needed to make responsible choices—preparing them to thrive both at school and as active, caring members of the wider community!

    Citizenship

Will develop the knowledge, skills and understanding that learners will need to play a full part in society as active and responsible citizens. Citizenship education will aim to foster learner’s awareness and understanding of democracy, government and how laws are made and upheld. Teaching seeks to equip learners with the skills and knowledge to explore political and social issues critically, to weigh evidence, debate and make reasoned arguments. It is aimed to prepare learners to take their place in society as responsible citizens, manage their money well and make sound financial decisions.

    Understanding the World of Work

Children will receive quality advice and guidance to prepare them for a changing workplace where they may need to adapt to new challenges in education, employment and training. They will also be able to make informed judgements to make effective decisions regarding the use and management of money.

    Careers

Opportunities will be offered to allow children to acquire the knowledge and competencies necessary for success in school, in the workplace and in their daily lives. They will discover that this is a lifelong journey of planning and learning resulting in successful career path choices and job opportunities that ensure life satisfaction and good mental health and well being. Teachers will guide the children into learning how to work and communicate with others effectively, valuing diversity of people and cultures, ideas and opportunities. There will be an understanding of the breadth of jobs available and the impact volunteering can have on local communities and in the wider world. Opportunities for community connections, real-life contexts, and experiences outside the school environment will be used to equip the children with the knowledge and personal and social competencies to manage their careers and life transitions.

    Financial Literacy

Opportunities to learn about money and handle money are provided to all children in school with the aim of providing them with the skills required to ‘make informed judgements and effective decisions regarding the use and management of money’ (Department for Education and Skills).

Children in all year groups are given opportunities to handle money, work with a budget and understand how money can be made and money can be lost. Opportunities for Financial Literacy teaching can include, but are not limited to Enterprise (Y6 Dragons’ Den; Y1 Hedge Veg); planning an event with a set budget; use of money in continuous provision (EYFS/Y1); researching and planning a holiday. In addition to managing money, children are also made aware of the different forms money can be present and that there are many different currencies around the world which enable people to trade.
