Join the Move! Why Active Travel Matters at La Houguette

At La Houguette, our school community thrives when we move together, and our Active Travel initiative has seen an incredibly positive response! What started during Walk to School Week has grown into a fantastic routine, with a staff and family-supported Walking Bus running every Friday for the Summer term. Choosing to walk, wheel, or cycle to school does so much more than just ease traffic congestion it has:-

    Mental & Academic Benefits

    • Arriving Alert and Ready to Learn: Physical activity pumps oxygen to the brain. Teachers regularly note that children who walk or cycle arrive more focused, attentive, and prepared for the classroom than those who are driven.

    • Stress Relief & Mental Well-being: Exercise releases endorphins ("happy hormones"), which help reduce anxiety, boost mood, and build mental resilience.

    • Increased Independence: Navigating a route helps children develop spatial awareness, road safety skills, and a sense of personal responsibility and confidence.

    Physical Health Benefits

    • Easy Way to Hit Daily Exercise Goals: It embeds physical activity into a child's daily routine, helping them easily achieve the recommended 60 minutes of daily exercise.

    • Cardiovascular & Muscle Strength: Regular walking or pedalling builds strong bones, healthy muscles, and excellent cardiovascular fitness.

    • Healthy Habit Formation: Children who practice active travel are statistically much more likely to maintain an active, healthy lifestyle into adulthood. Social & Community Benefits

    • Quality Connection Time: Walking or riding together gives parents and children a dedicated space to chat about their day without the distraction of traffic stress or phones.

    • Building Friendships: Initiatives like a "Walking Bus" allow children to socialize, laugh, and bond with their peers before the school bell even rings.

    • Safer, Quieter School Gates: Fewer cars mean less chaotic congestion outside the school, creating a much safer environment for everyone during drop-off and pick-up times.

    Environmental & Financial Benefits

    • Cleaner Air: Fewer idling engines dramatically reduces air pollution (specifically harmful nitrogen dioxide and particulates) right around the school gates where children breathe.

    • Lower Carbon Footprint: Replacing short car journeys with walking or cycling directly combats climate change by cutting greenhouse gas emissions.

    • Saving Money: With fewer car trips, families save significantly on fuel and vehicle wear-and-tear over the course of the school year.

Thanks to our dedicated Living Street, which is safely closed to traffic before and after school, plus our two designated bike stations and an open bottom field gate, active travel has never been easier or safer. With the PTA even planning a new adult bike park, we warmly encourage all families to ditch the car keys whenever possible. Let's work in partnership to keep our community active, healthy, and moving forward together!
